Gotta love the versatility of corsets!
Picked up this pink corset at a garage sale - thought the lace was pretty ugly, but there was a rather nice piece underneath that could be added to my theatre costume collection! Now it's perfect for the renaissance fair, a Shakespeare play, or the Rocky Horror Picture Show ;)

This isn't rightly a refashion. More a repair long long overdue. So - how awesome is this hat! Fawn velvet with gold ribbon and that great jeweled accent on top! Well, it's not something you might wear around the town, but it is a fabulous costume piece. Unfortunately, the mice got at it when I had it in storage a couple years ago. I rescued it, but not before... ...this happened. Unlikely as it may seem, it was actually helpful that the hole went all the way through the lining. It allowed me access to do some invisible stitching. With the addition of a little piece of extra velvet used as a tiny seam allowance, I repaired the hole as invisibly as I could, then sewed up the lining again. What do you think? On a family trip to Edinburgh, Scotland, my sister and I had tickets to attend the pagan Beltane celebrations on Calton Hill, where red and green people danced before bonfires in costumed array or simple nudity. In short, much fun was had by all! Here is the ticket for the event - I love how it warns "ATTENDANCE AT OWN RISK" We decided we couldn't attend without a proper costume, but as it was cold and rainy, we voted out the nude option. Instead, we decided accessories were the way to go! We started with these from the dollar store... Then cut and separated the flowers and leaves. I started sewing the leaves onto a shoelace we also bought at the dollar store While my sister was twisting up the wire stems of the flowers into a long strand. We sewed up a couple other accessories. Here are all the pieces we made! We tried on our new elfin crowns... And we went out to enjoy the festivities! Below, see pics of the procession, the May Queen lighting the bonfire, and the massive fire as seen from further up the hill.
I love costumes, and I love Shakespeare! It was time to put those loves together and try my hand at some Renaissance style garb! I found this red velvet shirt at a thrift store and thought it would be perfect... At the same thrift store outing, I scored with this eighties nightmare/princess dress. I knew I needed that black and gold lace! Also, I'm thinking the leftover velvet and satin dress will make a mighty fine Renaissance costume refashion numero dos.... I removed the shoulder pads from the red shirt and rolled them up. Next I covered them in red fabric and the gold and black trim. These shoulder pads were about to be transformed into....shoulder pads! or - epaulets? After much trimming and reshaping (including the insertion of a central panel) this jacket is the end result. Check out the classic shoulder pads made out of classic shoulder pads! I hope you like my renaissance refashion. I can't wait for number two! |
